I was listening to The Cranberries' "This is the Day
" when I drew this piece. If you haven't heard the song before, have a listen on YouTube
I wanted to draw something that could capture the emotion of this next book. Mindy is no ordinary demon, and Ki-Chan is going to be tested in ways she never has been before.
I'm sharing this today because I am celebrating a personal goal. I've already crossed 50,000 words and I am STILL not done! So this book will be longer than Book #1. Because of this, I'm still trying to decide how much art to add while keeping the cost down for you guys. I'd want Ki-Chan to be able to afford the book too after all, so it will be a balancing act for a few weeks.
Now that I am this far along, I can share with you all a few details. In this book, Ki-Chan's nightmares start to become sharper as she struggles with an unstable new power. Meanwhile, Ti-Chan finds himself a target at their new college, as Mindy seeks to destroy the Humanesques from the inside out. I hope you guys like action, because there will be much more fighting sequences this time around!

Ringing in the NEW!!
While Book #2 is still in development, I thought I'd rake a break long enough to share a tiny bit of news.
First of all, Book #2 is going to be LONGER than Book #1. As of this writing, I'm already at 42,000 words and I'm nowhere near done. Haven't decided on the number of illustrations as of yet or the cover, as I'm focusing more of my attention onto the content. Book #2 will have a little more comedy than Book #1 and more romance. I'm taking a little more time to expand roles for Humanesques not named Ki-Chan as well, so if you like say Lily or Ruey, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Second order of business, I've launched my own publishing company, so Book #2 will be the first title under the Koriander Publishing
label! Ki-Chan even serves as company mascot, I'm pretty excited about this.

And lastly, Ki-Chan's videos can now be seen on Blubrry, which should also let you add her videos to your iTunes or Android devices. Blubrry also has a 100% FREE Roku app, and everything is playing in HD right now.
2017 Is shaping up to be an interesting year. Please keep checking back as I will begin to unleash new details and artwork from the next book!

Ki-Chan's second book is half finished as of today. I still have plenty of artwork to finish, but I figured today was a good day to share with you all the first piece of art, which features Ki-Chan, Ti-Chan and the new demon, Mindy. How do you like it?
You guys are actually to thank for the grey skies. I got the inspiration after I saw a jump in sales of the Black and White copy of Ki-Chan's first book, which you can check out here
. Thank you all for your continued support! I do read every email I receive, so please keep them coming.
Some of you have said that you like the Black and White edition for the gray tones. Would you guys also like black and white t-shirt designs? Post a comment and let me know!
Of course, if you prefer color, you can snag the color copy of Book #1 here
. Just tossing that out there.
Book #2 will also be available in both black and white and color versions, paperback and Kindle. If you read Book #1, which version did you prefer?
So Ki-Chan's second book is underway, and her first book is starting to gain momentum. Now would be a great time to ask you guys what YOU would like to see! After all, YOU are responsible for her success. :)

Clocking in at 50,289 words exactly, Ki-Chan: Demon Hunter Book #1 is a certified NaNoWriMo WINNER for November 2016!! You can check out the page here
with a free NaNoWriMo login.
For those who don't know, #NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. It's a non-profit company that encourages people to write new novels and support their favorite authors. They also have a pretty cute Camp NaNoWriMo program in the summer to encourage young writers to keep at it. They foster encouragement via pep talk emails and badges.
While Amazon is still showing an incorrect date for certain copies of Ki-Chan, all four prints of the book didn't go live until November 3rd, 2016. So it was counted where I made the final word count within the month of November. If you plan to become an author yourself (or you already are) I encourage you to join me in supporting them. Next year YOU can win!

So just like Ruey, I am an avid gamer. I recently got a copy of Pokemon Moon
and discovered on Route 8 that there is a blonde, blue eyed backpacker named.... Kiana?? Well this trainer made me smile for a few reasons:
1. Her name is the same as Ki-Chan. Duh. (Ki-Chan's full name is Kiana Chan BTW.)
2. She actually has almost the exact same coloring as Ki-Chan's new rival for Book #2. (More soon!)
3. Her Pokemon is a level 20 Eevee. Eevee can become one of several kinds of Pokemon and has tons of untapped energy, just like Ki-Chan.
4. Backpacker Kiana has speech bubbles about fighting.
So in honor of this, allow me to give you guys a little back story on Ki-Chan's luggage in Book #1
Her blue, black and yellow backpack is actually based on my very first ever backpack. Made from the same material most commercial winter coats are, I lugged this thing around from the time I was 4 until I was starting to write Ki-Chan's stories, when very litterally, it exploded. I just don't even understand how, but after so many years of daily use, this thing fell apart. Not just at the seams, the fabric itself blew apart! I was actually pretty upset about losing it, so I decided to let Ki-Chan have it, which seems to go with that yellow cap. My backpack said "High Energy" on the front, so I replaced it with a re-spelling of Ki-Chan. I chose to mix Katakana and Hiragana on purpose, referencing my first spelling mistakes in Japanese. Ki of course can mean spirit or energy, and she can fly, so it all ties in at the end.

I was 13 years old and on my third re-write of Ki-Chan: Demon Hunter
back in 2000. This was election day, and I was sitting in a storage room, trying to think of a real reason why Ti-Chan and the others would leave America. I know I told you before about those dreams I had of everyone in Chichibu, but I had yet to dream of why. But suddenly, I saw a vision.
I saw a dark, slate blue sky. A nasty thunderstorm. I saw White people fighting each other over the Bible and which copy was right. I saw the sky turn red, as Republicans took over the House and Senate. I saw police officers shooting unarmed protesters, and then, I scribbled the following on notebook paper: The year is 2016-D.E. And these are rough times for many youths. Since the start of the digital revolution of the era A.D. there has been chaos among the many. Earth's population has dropped to a mere 1.5 billion, after centuries upon centuries of religious based war and famine. America, once a proud and bustling nation, is now a police state, where no longer does freedom of speech reign, but instead a watchful eye is cast on the few adventurous enough to speak boldly against a Christian militia. Graveyards of those slain by the government are adorned with stones of red marble, with one caption: Subdued in the name of God.
But despite a country living in censorship, there are still thirsty minds, hungry for a life abroad. Young men and women, starving for sunshine and oxygen, wanting to shed their dreary gray skies and endless rains, in exchange for a more open classroom. And here is where our story begins…
I took out a line about anything apocalyptic, but I remember keeping this paragraph, because at 13 I thought "WOW! What a great way to start a comic book!" and with that, I turned on the radio, where the Backstreet Boys' "The One
" was suddenly interrupted by an interesting phrase out of the boy band's home state of Florida.
Fearful, I abandoned writing one more word about America in Ki-Chan's world for four years. The last thing I remember scribbling down was a passage about a paper Ti-Chan was writing about The Statue of Liberty being renovated, and left it at that.
Then this past April, I re-typed the above phrase and put it on page 7 of Ki-Chan: Demon Hunter Book #1
. Again, I thought this would provide a decent backdrop for Ki-Chan's world and segue into Ti-Chan's trip.
America... I am so... so sorry.
The actual release date for Ki-Chan: Demon Hunter Book #1 is still November 3rd officially, but certain version "may" have been made available a tad early. Both Kindle versions are only 99 cents!
Full Color Paperback: $25
Full Color Kindle: 99 cents
